Looking for a Super Sized Killer Burrito on Long Island? Check Out Shrimpys Burrito Bar.

Could Long Island cravings for a killer burrito joint finally be satisfied? This Long Island restaurant review hi lights Shrimpys Burrito Bar. Shrimpys is serving up a variety of super sized and well seasoned burritos, overflowing with fresh ingredients and bold island vibes. The juicy, succulent shrimp with rice and beans are all seasoned with a distinct Spanish flair. If you are on the Island, their burritos, tacos, quesadillas and other special menu items are a reason to visit.

Why Shrimpy’s ?

So, it was the first Friday of lent and we wanted a meatless meal that was different, loud and easy on the budget. Checking the local areas Foodie card options, we came across Shrimpy’s and noted the shrimp and cod options. I asked some of my younger coworkers if they had ever been to this restaurant and a few had enjoyed burritos at the original location in Massapequa. We decided to try takeout for our first visit, then returned for lunch to get a better feel for the place and the menu.

Shrimpy’s Burrito Bar-Background

Shrimpy’s began as the implementation of a dream of two local friends. The first location in Massapequa opened in 2017, the second location in Huntington opened 2 years later. The East Islip location which is the location we visited opened about a year ago in 2022/2023. The Huntington location is moving to Northport in 2024. In addition to the three restaurant locations, there is also a Shrimpy’s food truck that can be booked to cater events.

The restaurant fits into the fast casual category, with reasonable prices and more than generous portions. The vibe of the restaurant is fun, young and casual. A definite effort in the decor and feel of the restaurant focuses on Long Islands south shore with a surfing beach mood. The cuisine, includes all the foods you would expect from a burrito bar. This includes 12 varieties of burritos, tacos and quesadillas.

Other menu items are what sets this apart from most burrito bars; shrimp skewers, an avocado bar, salads, crunch wraps and loaded tortillas, fries or tots. They run a taco Tuesday and burrito specials on Thursdays. Seating is first come, first serve, a bit limited but can be family friendly. Vibe is fun, definitely not romantic. Alcohol is served, including local brews, homemade sangria and Margaritas. The restaurant is located in the Heckscher shopping center at 322 East Main Street in East Islip. The hours are Monday – Thursday 11:30-9 pm, Friday -Saturday 11:30-10 pm and Sunday 11:30-8 pm.

Our Restaurant Review of Shrimpy’s Burrito Bar

The restaurant is situated in a strip shopping center, the main tenant Pat’s supermarket. When you walk in you notice the decor presenting a summery beach vibe. Tables are high top and made of knotty wood. One table seats 4 and a long table with a bench on one side and stools on the other. The walls are covered with beach and nautical photos and murals. Background music is pleasant, mostly soft rap and upbeat while the restaurant possesses an appetizing smell of the grill.

The counter is set back in the rear, away from the tables. Staff at the counter were helpful and friendly. We picked up our food before dinner time so cannot comment on how crowded it gets during peak times.

The Food
Shrimpys Burrito Bar Specials
Shrimpys taco Tuesday, thirsty burrito thursday specials.

Our first visit was for takeout on a Friday evening. We ordered ahead and the food was ready as promised. Pickup time was after work around 4:30 and there was not much activity yet at the counter. We ordered the South Shore Burrito with cod fish, The Shrimpy burrito and a Shrimpy shrimp skewer. The weight of the bag made it clear that the portions are extremely generous. We returned for lunch and had the lunch special, two tacos, tortilla chips, salsa and a large drink.

The ingredients of the South Shore burrito most closely mimic how we prepare them at home, however, Shrimpys burrito is probably at least twice the size of our homemade burritos. The South Shore is filled with seasoned rice and black beans, jalapeño, pico de gallo, sautéed peppers and onions, a blend of cheeses and an avocado poblano ranch dressing. Choices for protein; chicken, pork, beef, fried chicken, steak, grilled shrimp, fried shrimp and cod fish. On this visit we chose cod fish.

When you unwrap your selection, the first thing that you notice is the sheer size of the burrito. We couldn’t resist and pulled out the kitchen scale. It weighed in at 1 pound and 9 ounces. This will satisfy the most aggressive appetite. The outside of the burrito includes a nice browning and crunch in the tortilla created by grilling. This important step is missed at many fast casual burrito bars.

The rice is blended with tastily seasoned black beans. The amount of rice is perfect and not overdone. We have had burritos at other locations where you are overwhelmed with rice and search for the main ingredients as you consume the burrito. While seasoned well, the flavor of authentic Spanish or Puerto Rican rice would add a huge flavor enhancement to the burrito. We continue to explore for a place that makes a burrito with true Spanish rice.

The codfish was breaded and fried. When you bite into the cod, you will note a slight spice on your tongue, not heat but flavor. Could this be a bit of Old Bay added to the breadcrumb? We aren’t certain, but it is very nice. We will try and confirm this suspicion.

The Shrimpy skewer includes 4 large shrimp that can be served grilled or fried. We selected grilled and they were cooked to perfection. They come slathered in Shrimpys secret sauce that is colored similar to thousand island dressing. The texture is smooth, creamy, a bit sweet and full of flavor.

The ingredients of the namesake Shrimpy burrito include seasoned rice, pico de gallo, sautéed peppers and onions, a cheese blend, guacamole, grilled shrimp and the special Shrimpy sauce. Again, the size of the burrrito is super sized. When you bite into the Shrimpy burrito you are greeted with a generous amount of succulent shrimp. They are fresh, crunchy and cooked to perfection. We have noticed that over cooked shrimp is often associated with fast casual dining but not here! As noted above, the rice is well seasoned, but we continue to hope one day to find a burrito bar using authentic Spanish rice.

After the shrimp, we noted the guacamole served to create a creamy texture blending all of the ingredients together. We let this sit before eating it, so the reheat was not friendly to the guacamole. That is on us, not Shrimpys. We suggest eating this menu item there or if ordering takeout, eat as soon as possible.

For lunch we had a chicken and beef taco. These tacos are large. If you are familiar with Taco Bell, these are more than double the size of their tacos. They are topped with a Monterey/ cheddar cheese blend, a kale slaw, chopped tomatoes, sour cream, a poblano avocado ranch dressing and your choice of protein. The chicken portion was healthy, but was too lightly seasoned. We prefer a robust rub or marinade, avoiding bland or plain tasting chicken. The beef was well seasoned. We would prefer more Mexican spices and less salt.

  • Cost (February 2024): Burritos $10-$15, tacos $4-$7, quesadillas $8-$15, salads $13-$15, nachos $9-$16
  • Sample dishes: Shrimpy burrito, South Shore burrito, Shrimpy skewer and chicken, beef tacos
  • Pro’s: Large portions for a reasonable price. The shrimp and special sauce are delectable. Great variety. We have not yet tried much of the menu.
  • Con’s: The chicken protein option is a bit under seasoned. Caveat is that we enjoy highly seasoned, loud food.
  • Bonus tips: The Shrimpy skewers are only $5 when added to a burrito order. Get them. Order extra Shrimpy sauce.

If you are on Long Island, hungry and in the mood for a killer burrito we recommend giving Shrimpys Burrito Bar a try. The portions are enough for the biggest appetite, or if you’re gummied out! The shrimp offerings are excellent as one would expect from a restaurant named Shrimpys Burrito Bar. We would award a 4 star rating if we limited our review to the shrimp and seafood options. We sampled food from their newest location in East Islip, but you can also try the locations in Nassau county in Massapequa or if you are on the north shore in Northport.
