Our Artisan Crafted Panera Copycat Turkey Apple Cheddar Sammi on Whole Grain improves Panera’s Classic sandwich with a delectable twist or two, or three!

Craving a Panera Turkey Apple Cheddar, but want to level it up? This recipe is for you! We’ve taken the classic combo and added gourmet touches: sun-dried tomato mayo for added complexity, red onion for a bite and crispy bacon for added indulgence all wrapped in hearty whole grain bread. Plus, you can choose between turkey or grilled chicken for the protein. It’s the perfect light yet satisfying lunch or dinner that’s easy to whip up at home in minutes!

Which version is better; Panera or Trader Joe’s?

Unfortunately, the Panera version of this dish is no longer available, making a direct comparison difficult. Since we couldn’t find any information about it on their menus, we had to rely on our memories to discuss its features.

Both sandwiches share some common ground, like the delicious Dijon-mayo spread. However, there are also some big differences. The Panera version we remember included bacon, which is missing from the Trader Joe’s option. On the other hand, Trader Joe’s throws in some pecans for a nutty twist. The biggest difference lies in the bread: Trader Joe’s uses a multigrain option, while Panera went for a cranberry walnut bread.

Both versions are really good, but don’t approach perfection. To create our sandwich and improve on the prior and current contestants, we borrowed some of our favorite features from both, then added some individuality to make it ours.

Is this Turkey, Apple Cheddar Sandwich Healthy?

The name hints at healthy but we all know how a recipe can be deceiving. Turkey is a low fat protein, apples check the fruit and vegetable box and cheese, in reasonable quantities, is protein rich. Appears healthy so far! Unfortunately, the entrees from both chains are bloated with what we would consider excess calories and fat. Why? Most large sandwiches that we all love have one or more items that are not great for us. Mayonnaise, which is a favorite condiment, fits that description and the culprit that adds unnecessary fat and calories on these sandwiches.

When reformulating a recipe, we try to consider taste and health benefits. Our recipe starts with whole grain or multi grain bread. If calories are a concern, there are low calorie options you can use. The prior link is a staple in our pantry. We kept the bacon, as it pairs so well with the other ingredients. Turkey bacon can save you fat and calories, but that savings will definitely degrade the taste of the sandwich. Turkey bacon simply doesn’t taste as good as traditional bacon. But if you are good with it, make that substitution!

Ditch the mayo, boost the flavor! We love creamy avocado mayo for a spread, and mixing it with diced sun-dried tomatoes adds a delicious twist. Regular mayo can be loaded with unhealthy fats, so we recommend substituting the mayo with this lighter option.  Want an extra health kick? Make a guacamole and sun-dried tomato spread. Guacamole is packed with good fats and nutrients, making this a win-win for taste and health. To keep the calorie count in check, go easy on the cheese.

A solid substitution is swapping out the cheddar for Brie. Something we discovered by doing our homework for this blog post. This combination appears to be quite popular.

What can I serve with a Copycat Panera Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich?

This hearty sandwich is practically begging for a side dish to complete the meal. Consider pairing it with one of our delicious soups! Our Healthy Pasta Fagioli and  Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup with Spinach from a previous blog post would be fantastic choices, but any soup from this link would work well.

Looking for something lighter? A simple salad would be a perfect complement.

How to make this Copycat Panera Turkey Apple and Cheddar Sandwich?

Simple and Versatile: A Weeknight Savior!

This sandwich may become your new busy weeknight dinner hero! It’s incredibly easy to throw together and endlessly customizable. While our description below might seem a little complex at first, realize that we’re giving you two delicious options to choose from.

The first option is most similar to the entree you may have enjoyed at Panera before it was discontinued. It is made with good quality deli turkey (please do not use prepackaged turkey!) with creamy avocado mayo and tangy sun-dried tomatoes. The creamy spread with sun dried tomatoes provides a magnificently smooth yet chewy texture while adding an earthy sweetness. The bacon, sliced apples, red onion and cheddar complete the stack of ingredients further enhancing the complexity of this sandwich.

The second option we offer is a lighter and less processed twist than option one, swapping the deli turkey for grilled chicken breast and swapping the mayo for fresh, vibrant guacamole. This option includes some smokiness from the grilled chicken and added creaminess inherent with the guacamole. This option is a bit messier due to the imperfect grilled cutlet and creaminess of the guac. Both versions are packed with flavor and perfect for a healthy meal on the go. We think you will love either, but we implore you to feel free and get creative! Feel free to substitute what you prefer or what is available in your pantry.

This option is a crowd-pleasing favorite! We start by crisping up a few slices of bacon. To keep things a little lighter, we recommend trimming off any excess fat before cooking. If you prefer a healthier option, feel free to substitute turkey bacon. No matter which type you choose, cook the bacon until it is nice and crunchy, but not burnt.

Next, prep the toppings. With a sharp knife, chop up the sun-dried tomatoes, slice the red onion, and choose your favorite apple. The knife set linked come with a sharpener and an attractive wooden station to hold them. We recommend having the knives you use most professionally sharpened once a year.

For the apples we love honey crisp or Fuji varieties for their sweetness and crunch. But feel free to use any variety you enjoy. Finally, lightly toast the whole grain bread. Aim for a golden brown exterior with a slight but not brittle texture.

Spread some mayonnaise on one slice of whole grain toast. We love avocado mayo, and our favorite version made with basil and dill adds a delightful twist. Top the mayo with chopped sun-dried tomatoes and red onion.

Next, add the thinly sliced apple, followed by a generous amount of turkey (we used four large slices for a protein punch). Layer cheddar cheese on the turkey, then sprinkle with fresh arugula. Don’t forget to spread the other slice of toast with your delicious and luxurious avocado mayo! Finally, close the sammi, cut it in half, and enjoy.

Option 2: Copycat Panera or Trader Joe’s Sammi

The second option uses the same ingredients with two modifications; we substitute the deli turkey for grilled chicken and the mayonnaise for guacamole. This version is a bit lighter, yet you aren’t penalized for that healthy switch!

To prepare, crisp up the bacon and cut up the sun dried tomatoes, red onion and apple as you did above. Grill the chicken breast (that has been sliced in half). We recommend using a marinade such as Italian dressing for addional flavor and moisture. You will require guacamole for this version. Feel free to purchase a store prepared version you are happy with, or you can make it fresh with this recipe.

Lightly toast the whole grain bread. Spread some guacamole on one slice of toast. Top the guacamole with chopped sun-dried tomatoes and red onion for a burst of flavor. Next, add the thinly sliced apple, followed by a healthy sized grilled chicken breast. Layer bacon and cheddar cheese on the chicken breast, then sprinkle with a handful of fresh arugula. Don’t forget to spread the other slice of toast with your delicious guacamole! Finally, close the sandwich, cut it in half, and enjoy.

  • 1/2 Pound good quality deli Turkey, or fresh

  • 1/4 Pound cheddar cheese

  • Option 2 with Grilled chicken and Guacamole:

  • 1/2 Pound guacamole, made fresh or store bought. Use this in place of the avocado mayonnaise in option 1

Directions

  • Cook bacon until crisp, set aside.
  • While bacon is cooking, cut up the sun dried tomatoes and onions and lightly toast the whole grain bread. Set aside.
  • OPTION 1) Start with two slices of toasted whole grain bread. Slather avocado mayonnaise on both. Top the bottom slice with diced sun dried tomatoes , sliced red onions and thinly cut apple slices. Add at least 4 slices of folded deli turkey and 2-3 slices of cheddar on the base of the sandwich. • OPTION 2) Start with two slices of toasted whole grain bread. Substitute guacamole for the avocado mayonnaise. Spread on both slices. Top with sun dried tomatoes, red onions and thinly cut apple slices. Substitute grilled chicken for the turkey, then top with cheddar cheese. • Add bacon and a small handful of arugula. Top with the remaining slice of bread. Carefully cut the sandwich in half to simplify holding and eating the sandwich. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Feel free to mix and match, use Guac with the turkey, or avocado mayonaise with the grilled chicken.
  • As Amazon affiliates we may earn on qualifying purchases.
  • Some toasters, especially toaster ovens just don’t get hot enough. This results in overcooked and brittle toast. If your toaster does this, consider browning the toast on a griddle or grill.
