Before starting our foray into food blogging, our turkey burrito recipe was probably our most popular dish to bring to get-togethers with family and friends. Once convinced these were not from a restaurant, most confessed that these were the best burritos they have ever had. While we are not located in the American southwest, the mecca for this cuisine, the compliment remains impressive as we love watching others enjoy our passion.

Besides possessing an authentic taste, these turkey burritos are a simple recipe for a weekday healthy meal as they are a low fat alternative to a traditional burrito. By skipping the tortilla and making a burrito bowl, the recipe can also be low in carbs. Combined, with their amazing taste and health profile, we think you will agree these turkey burritos are better than Chipotle!

Are homemade turkey, bean and rice burritos healthy?

Our healthy ground turkey burritos with black beans and rice include bold Southwestern spices, black beans, rice and cheese to create a delectable combination of flavor and texture that is irresistible. In addition to using low fat protein (ground turkey) and beans, our recipe is devoid of added salt. Who hasn’t devoured a burrito at their favorite chain or local restaurant and afterward experienced swelling from the salt content? We find that puzzling as the seasonings and spices make the use of additional salt unnecessary. The reduction in salt, use of low fat turkey and black beans improve the health profile of our burritos over store bought. Just be careful with the cheese and limit or eliminate sour cream!

Burritos have become one of the most popular food items in the USA, rivaling pizza and burgers to many. However, where did this amazing Tex-mex food originate? Was it Mexico, or the American Southwest? The answer isn’t definitive and it varies with the source. When one considers changes to political borders during the 19th century, a safe bet would be to identify its origin to this entire geographic region. In addition to identifying the origin, numerous amusing anecdotes and bizarre claims are also uncovered when researching this topic.

Low Carb Turkey Burrito Bowl

Want to reduce the carbs of this meal? Eliminate the tortilla and make a burrito bowl. Simply place the filling in a bowl and add with your choice of toppings. We recommend some cheese, guacamole and salsa.

Is your burrito recipe easy to make?

In addition to their popularity and bold taste, our burrito recipe is also simple to prepare. While browning the seasoned meat, chop the ingredients and prepare the sofrito. For those who are not familiar with sofrito, it’s the basis of most Latin American food. It is comprised of a blend of peppers, onions, garlic, cilantro and seasonings. When the meat is mostly cooked, remove and simmer the sofrito with the beans. The aroma of a sofrito is amazing and yankee candle should create a candle with this scent. When the sofrito has softened, add the meat, rice, salsa and seasonings to the sofrito and beans. Turn off and let cool.

Filling the burrito will take a bit of practice. Simply place cheese on top third of tortilla, add meat mixture, then more cheese on top. Even out the mixture. Fold the left and right side of the tortilla to form a triangular shape. Fold the bottom over the filling, tuck it and roll while keeping it snug. You may tear the first one until you figure out how tight to make the roll. We are confidant you will pick this up quickly.

What vegetables are good in a burrito?

Tomatoes, peppers, corn, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, avocado or guacamole are vegetables that are great inside a burrito. We don’t include these in ours, but many enjoy adding these vegetables and crafting a burrito similar to how they enjoy one at their favorite chain. Just remember the more filling you add, the more difficult it will be to fold it.

Once filled, you can microwave the burritos from here. However, we suggest browning them on a skillet to add some crunch to the tortilla. The crunch of the browned tortilla adds some complexity to the texture and an added flavor to each bite. Soft or crunchy is left to your preference. We also suggest making extra as they are also great leftover. Just reheat and enjoy. We recommend reheating in the microwave for 30 seconds then placing in toaster oven to complete the reheat and add some crunch.

These perfectly seasoned, cheesy, and bold flavored burritos are healthier than store bought and will have your family and friends asking for more, and the recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey

  • 4 tsp chili powder

  • 1/2 tsp cumin

  • 6 Burrito size tortillas

  • 1 large onion diced

  • 1/2 small green pepper diced

  • 1 jalapeño seeded and diced

  • 2 cloves garlic minced

  • 1 15.5 oz can of black beans drained

  • 1 packet Sazón with coriander & annato

  • 1 1/2 cups cooked rice

  • 2-3 Cups shredded Cheddar cheese

  • 1/3 cup cilantro roughly chopped

  • 1 1/2 cups salsa

  • 1/8 cup chili powder

  • 1/2 tsp cumin

  • 1 Tbs oregano

  • 1/2 tsp ground chipotle pepper

Directions

  • On medium high, drizzle some olive oil in a large skillet. Add the ground turkey. Evenly distribute the meat in the pan and let it cook for about 45 seconds or until slightly browned before flipping. Add 4 tsp chili powder and 1/2 tsp cumin and begin to break the meat apart trying to keep it somewhat chunky. This part is also is about preference. You can completely break apart the meat to a finer consistency if that’s what you prefer. Cook until no longer pink. Remove and drain any fat. Set aside.
  • Drizzle the skillet with olive oil. Add onions, green pepper, jalapeños and garlic. Sauté for 30 seconds before adding the can of drained black beans to the skillet. Continue sautéing until peppers are soft and onion is translucent.
  • Return the cooked ground turkey to the skillet. Add 1/8 cup of chili powder, 1/2 tsp cumin, packet of Sazón, oregano, ground chipotle pepper and cilantro. Mix well. Cook for about 2 minutes. Add rice. Stir to combine. Add salsa. Mix everything well. Cook for another minute or two or until heated through. Allow the mixture to cool a bit.
  • Soften tortillas to make them more pliable in the microwave. Wrap them in a damp paper towel and place in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. This also works if for some reason they are stuck and difficult to separate.
  • Place one softened tortilla down on your surface. Add half of the 1/3 cup or 1/2 cup ( if you want them cheesier) of cheese about an inch or two from the bottom and ends. Then add the meat mixture directly above the cheese. Finish with the other half of the cheese. Fold sides in first, similar to a triangular shape. Then fold the bottom half over the mixture. Tuck tightly and roll. See photos below. Continue to do the same thing for each burrito.
  • Once all are completed, heat a griddle or a skillet sprayed with a cooking spray. Add as many of the burritos as you can and brown each side. Serve hot. Enjoy!
