When is striped bass season?
In New York, striped bass season runs from April 15 thru December 15 in marine waters and April 1 thru November 30 for freshwater on the Hudson River, north of the George Washington bridge and all year on the Delaware river. Despite the dates where catching the fish is permitted, striper season on Long Island excels in the fall when the weather begins to cool and the fish migrate.
At this time of the year, Stripers can be caught off the beach with a surf pole, or in a boat in the ocean or bay. A word of caution, this fishery is heavily regulated so be certain to know the size and catch limits before partaking in this fantastic fishing extravaganza.
The regulations for each state may vary, so here are some links for the mid Atlantic and New England states who have great striper fishing. You can fish for striped bass around the Chesapeake in Virginia, or perhaps Maryland. New Jersey has a long shoreline for a small state. Connecticut and Rhode Island abut Long Island Sound in New England. Finally there are the New England states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. For those not inclined to catch their own, any reputable fish market in these areas should have fresh striped bass the entire season for all to enjoy!
Is striped bass a fresh or saltwater fish?
Striped bass are anadromous, meaning they spend portions of their lives in fresh and saltwater. When mature, they live in the ocean but return each spring to freshwater to spawn. Juveniles remain in estuaries 2-3 years before migrating to the ocean. For further information click here.
What is the striped bass world record?
These fish get big, explaining why people love fishing them. We are talking 70 to 80 pounds! Click here and here for resources discussing record catches.
Striped Bass Fishing; How to catch a Striper
Many never consider fishing because they don’t have access to a boat. In the autumn on Long Island, and the entire northeast United States, Stripers can be caught right off the beach. Surf fishing for stripers on a cool brisk fall day is an experience all should experience.
No matter where you fish for them, from the beach or a boat, stripers can be caught using live or refrigerated bait, or striped bass jigs and Striper lures. Our expedition that caught the Striper that we cooked for this post was caught from a boat located just off the shore of Gilgo Beach on Jones Island. Jones island is a barrier island off Long Islands south shore. We used a classic striped bass bait, bunker, and brought in two keepers! This recipe is simple to follow, even for novice cooks. With just a few ingredients, you can create a restaurant quality meal in your own kitchen. All that is required is fresh striped bass, limes, olive oil, fresh garlic, cilantro and salt and pepper. Mix together all the ingredients in a small prep bowl, remove about a third of the marinade to a separate bowl and set aside. Place the marinade mixture into a ziplock bag with the fillets and marinade for 30-60 minutes.
Once marinated, get your grill hot and oil the grates to avoid sticking. Place the marinated Striper fillets on the hot grill for 3-4 minutes, flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes. Remove the fillets and serve immediately. If you desire add some additional marinade that was set aside and didn’t touch the raw fish onto your grilled striped bass. Serve with the vegetable of your choice, rice, quinoa or risotto. This meal exemplifies eating healthy but not giving up flavor, a perfect demonstration of our tagline; Love Life, Live Healthy.
The prep bowls and grill utensils recommended above are the perfect kitchen tools needed to assemble this dish. If you are considering a grill, we have sworn by Webers for what seems like forever.
